It takes one bite from an infected mosquito to break your pet’s heart!
Gastonia pet owners – Heartworms are a serious and potentially fatal disease in pets, particularly in Gastonia with the prevalence of mosquitoes. Foot-long worms live in the heart, lungs & blood vessels of infected pets, causing lung disease, heart failure, organ damage and can be fatal if untreated.
How does my pet get heartworms? Heartworms living in an infected dog, cat or wildlife produce baby worms that circulate in the bloodstream. When a mosquito bites an infected animal, it picks up these worms and when it bites another animal, the worms enter through the bite wound. Heartworms can grow and live for 5 – 7 years in dogs and 3 years in cats.
How prevalent is heartworm disease in Gastonia? Heartworm disease is a year-round problem. In Gaston County, 1 in 54 dogs tested positive for heartworms.
What can I do to protect my pet? Heartworm disease is preventable! Dogs should be tested annually and before starting prevention. Prevention is the safest and most cost-effective option, but treatment is available for dogs (although costly & lengthy). Cats should be tested before starting prevention and re-tested as the veterinarian deems appropriate. There is NO treatment in cats, so prevention is critical and the only means of protection.
Wilkinson Animal Hospital has safe, effective products available that must be administered 12 months of the year to protect your pet.

Don’t forget about our Dental Month Special – save $25 in February!
Gastonia – February is Pet Dental Health Month! Wilkinson Animal Hospital is celebrating by offering $25 off dental cleaning appointments!
Dogs and cats experience the same dental problems as people, including plaque and tartar buildup that can lead to gingivitis and dental disease.
Besides BAD BREATH, dental disease:
Releases bacteria in the bloodstream
Increases risk for heart, liver and kidney disease
Can cause severe pain and problems for your pet
Pets need regular dental cleanings to increase quality and length of life. Regular dental cleanings:
Allow us to chart periodontal disease over time
Means less time under anesthesia
Reduce need for more advanced and expensive treatment in future
Can add up to 2-4 years to your pet’s life
Dental disease is THE most common disease in dogs. Recent studies show that 85% of cats and 92% of dogs over age 3 have periodontal disease. Don’t let your pet be a statistic- schedule their dental cleaning appointment today!
What Happens During My Pet’s Dental Cleaning?
During a dental cleaning (sometimes called a prophylaxis), plaque and tartar are removed from a pet’s teeth and the health of the entire mouth (tongue, gums, lips, and teeth) is assessed.
A thorough dental cleaning can be accomplished only while the pet is under general anesthesia. The anesthesia we use is safe for animals and your pet is monitored constantly while under anesthesia. Prior to anesthesia, blood tests are performed to help uncover any hidden illnesses.
Offer expires February 28, 2018. Offer not good with other discounts or offers. Pets undergoing anesthesia for dental cleaning must be up to date on vaccinations and parasite tests. Preanesthetic blood tests required for the safety of your pet.
Molly, one of our amazing Veterinary Nurses and I had the opportunity to speak to 3 classes at Holbrook Middle School (6th – 8th graders). I love talking about the wonderful opportunities available in our profession. This couldn’t be a more rewarding and fulfilling career. I love my job.
Why is this? Well…Ironically, I tell the students that it was in my 7th grade career day class that I decided to be a veterinarian…pretty cool, eh? I tell them this is a profession where not ONE day is the same as another. It is truly never boring! There are always new things to learn, new stories from our wonderful pet owners, new ways to help pets be more comfortable and feel better…never a dull moment.
Molly brought her dog Whopper along…I think he could’ve really been the star of the show! Molly has him so well trained. He did his “give me the right paw, left paw, high five, and a kiss” routine. This was received with “ooohhhs and ahhhhs and claps”. The kids really loved having a friendly, unconditional-loving, tail-wagging, huggable dog to brighten their day. I think we’ll bring him back next year. I’d like to think we did some good by infusing some wonder in the young people’s minds…after all, they will be the ones taking care of us someday!

Take a look at our newest edition to make our facility “power outage proof”. We are calling it the “Big Green Power Machine”!
Our new generator runs on natural gas and will power the entire hospital in the event of a power outage.
We’re here to ensure your pet is cared for and safe, even in the event of severe weather, lightning strikes, ice storms, snow storms and the like.
The second thing my wonderful, artistic and creative wife, Vicki, did for our new animal hospital in 2002 was to engage our clients to submit a story about one of their pets. We were to pick the best ones from the submissions and create a book for our reception area that contained their stories and a commemorative tile in their pet’s name to line our reception desk in the lobby of the new (now existing) hospital. Well…we couldn’t chose since they were ALL good so we chose all of them. You can still find these stories in our waiting area in a large notebook. The photos shown here are some of the tiles of these beloved pets.
