Right now through the end of the year tends to be the time that fleas begin to reach higher levels. At least this is true in our climate here in Gastonia, NC. Why is this? The flea spends most of its life on a live animal (dog, cat, etc.). It feeds and lays 40-50 eggs in one day which drop off the unsuspecting pet wherever they go. Then they develop into a cocoon stage (pupae) that can lay dormant for several months (see the flea life cycle diagram). So, we’ve had a LOT of dry weather this year. I’m willing to bet there are a LOT of flea pupae (cocoons) laying around WAITING for moisture and the right time to hatch. Now is NOT the time to let up on your pets Flea and Tick control! Make sure you continue it year round to prevent the life cycle of the flea from getting out of hand. Ask us about Bravecto – an oral flea and tick product for dogs that lasts 3 months or Revolution for cats (1 month). Make sure to treat ALL pets in your family.
